Lighting Intervention at Basantapur Durbar Square
TEAM MEMBERS
ABSTRACT
In this case study fieldwork, lighting measurements and observations were conducted at Basantapur Durbar Square, a World Heritage Site in Nepal, to evaluate the lighting conditions and their impact on the site’s architectural and cultural heritage. The study involved measuring the illuminance levels and uniformity of the lighting using a light meter, as well as observing the visual effects of the lighting on the historic structures and public spaces. The findings revealed that the existing lighting system did not meet the recommended illuminance levels for safe pedestrian movement and preservation of the heritage structures. Additionally, the lighting design was found to have a negative impact on the visual perception of the site’s architectural features, causing glare and uneven illumination. The study highlights the importance of conducting lighting assessments in heritage sites to ensure that lighting systems are appropriate and sustainable, contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage.
